Wales will benefit from a planned £250m investment thanks to our partnership with the UK, Welsh and local governments. We are building a secure and reliable local source of advanced chips, ensuring supply chain stability to power UK and international industries.

Vishay Newport is one of the few semiconductor plants which has the potential to grow and bring new technologies to market, notably compound semiconductor power conversion (a more efficient technology than silicon-based semiconductors).

No Net Zero without Compound Semiconductors
At Vishay Newport, we are developing advanced compound semiconductor production lines. With far better performance, these chips have a huge number of applications across industries:

  • Electric vehicles: Enabling longer driving distances and faster EV charging times.
  • Data centres: Upgrading the world’s data centres to compound semiconductors, reducing energy losses by 30 to 40%.
  • Wind turbines and solar power: Driving the next generation of wind turbines, delivering more efficient power generation and supporting grid decarbonisation.
  • A wide range of aerospace, defence, space and industrial applications, from NASA’s Mars Rover to advanced avionics that keep our allies secure.

More than 95% of the technology developed in the Welsh compound semiconductor cluster is exported around the world.

South Wales is recognised as a global hub for developing new technologies that support cutting edge industry. There isn’t a region in the world which has the breadth of compound semiconductor capability that exists in Newport.

High Skilled Jobs

Our investment will support over 500 skilled jobs that pay higher than average wages, as well as hundreds more in the wider supply chain.

We are investing in the future of Newport and South Wales. Our innovation is powered through our partnerships with researchers at Cardiff, Swansea, USW and Warwick Universities and with CSconnected, the cluster of companies in South Wales delivering the next generation of semiconductors. We support PhD students and some of those graduates are now working at the Fab. We also support primary school students and those doing apprenticeships, as well as staff doing degrees in engineering up to masters’ level.

Community Partners

As the UK’s biggest semiconductor manufacturing facility, we open up the Fab and work with researchers and scientists in the local cluster to support them to test new technologies and help bring them to market.

In particular, we are proud of our award-winning female engineers, who have been recognised for their skills and innovation. Our award-winning outreach programme with local schools, in partnership with Dragons RFC, is inspiring a future generation – and importantly, young women and girls – to follow careers in STEM.

We work closely with local partners and companies, including through CSconnected, the world-leading compound semiconductor cluster in South Wales. Evidence from other countries shows that,for every job created in the semiconductor industry, nearly six other jobs are created in related industries and supply chains.

Through the efficient power our chips deliver to wind turbines, and using renewable energy at our factory, we’re helping deliver the Government’s aim for a 100% clean electricity system by 2035.

We implement the RBA code of conduct – a set of social, environmental and ethical industry requirements derived from international standards, including from the UN and the ILO.
