History of Newport Wafer Fab

Newport Wafer Fab has had eight different owners since it was built, Vishay wants to bring stability and certainty to the Fab, with investments over the coming two decades as a minimum. As a company with sixty years’ experience in manufacturing across the world, with similar factories in Europe, we want to reassure workers and the community of our long-term commitment to the Fab.

Timeline

1980

Inmos, a British semiconductor company, commissions a microprocessor manufacturing facility in Newport. It is designed by the Richard Rogers Partnership, his first building in Wales.

1984

Inmos is acquired by Thorn EMI, a British company created after the merger of Thorn Electrical Industries and the EMI music group.

1984
1989

Thorn EMI sold Inmos to SGS Thomson Microelectronics, a French-Italian conglomerate.

1989
1999

A management buyout takes over the factory, which is renamed European Semiconductor Manufacturing Limited.

1999
2002

The factory is sold to International Rectifier, an American power management technology company.

2002
2015

International Rectifier and the factory becomes part of Infineon Technologies.

2015
2017

Infineon sells the factory to Neptune 6 and the site becomes known as ‘Newport Wafer Fab’.

2021

The fab is sold to Nexperia, a Chinese owned company, headquartered in the Netherlands.

2021
November 2022

The UK Government orders Nexperia to sell its stake for national security reasons.

November 2023

Vishay, a US headquartered manufacturer, agrees to buy Nexperia’s stake in Newport Wafer Fab, signalling a new start and new investment in the fab.

2030 onwards

2030 onwards – Vishay is committed to Newport Wafer Fab for the long term. We see investment in a minimum of twenty year cycles. By investing in the production of new technologies, we believe Newport Wafer Fab has the potential to bring significant benefits to the wider economy in Newport and Wales.
