Community Partnership Recognised for STEM work

September 2025
Our innovative partnership with Dragons RFC to engage with schools across Gwent has been shortlisted in the 2025 Wales STEM Awards, in just our first year of delivery.
Since April, the programme has successfully engaged with over 600 pupils across 13 schools, delivering impactful STEM education that’s already making a real difference, through bilingual workshops.
The programme engages young people in future industries using sport as a powerful motivator to engage this audience.
The UK Government has identified semiconductors as one of five critical technologies in its 2023 Science & Technology Framework. The UK and Welsh Governments are focused on expanding the semiconductor workforce from 3,000 to 6,000 skilled individuals.
Angharad Kibble, who runs the programme for Dragons RFC, said: “By introducing children to the science and careers behind semiconductor technologies, we are demystifying an industry that is often invisible to the public, despite its essential role in everything from mobile phones to electric vehicles.”
There are currently 9.4 million people in STEM roles, yet many industries still struggle to find homegrown talent. The programme is strategically designed to contribute to the national agenda of developing a skilled, homegrown workforce capable of meeting the demands of a fast-evolving global economy, as well as encouraging more girls, women and people from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities into the industry.

A Year 6 pupil who had never considered STEM said after our “Introduction to STEM & Semiconductors” workshop: “I want to invent something that helps the planet. I didn’t think science was for me, but now I want to do more.”

Engineers and staff from Vishay help co-deliver sessions, provide insights into semiconductor careers, and offer mentorship and industry exposure to pupils and teachers alike. A recent Dragons STEM Fair connected learners with professionals from Swansea University, Bute Energy, The Royal Navy and the WRU Apprenticeship Programme.

The awards evening will take place on Thursday, 16th October at The Cardiff Holland House Hotel.
