Vishay welcomes reports highlighting strength of semiconductor sector
June 2026
Vishay Newport has welcomed the publication of two reports that underline the strategic importance of the semiconductor sector to the UK’s economic resilience, manufacturing sovereignty and future industrial growth.
The reports highlight the scale, impact and future potential of the semiconductor sector in South Wales and across the UK, while reinforcing the importance of continued investment in domestic manufacturing capability, skills, innovation and supply chain development.
CSconnected’s Strength in Places Fund (SIPF) Impact Report 2026 shows the significant contribution of the South Wales semiconductor cluster, which now supports £436 million in Welsh Gross Value Added (GVA) and more than 3,100 jobs across Wales – mostly of them highly-skilled and well-paid. The report also points to progress in research, manufacturing, skills development and supply chain growth, further strengthening South Wales’ reputation as a leading semiconductor hub.
The findings are reinforced by the UK Government’s Semiconductor Sector Study 2026, which sets out the continued growth and strategic importance of the UK semiconductor industry. The study notes that semiconductors underpin global markets worth more than $10 trillion, with worldwide semiconductor sales reaching $796 billion in 2025. It also found that the UK’s dedicated semiconductor sector generated £10.6 billion in revenue, contributed £7.5 billion in GVA and directly employed more than 16,000 people in 2025.
Importantly, the study identifies significant opportunities for the UK to capture a greater share of the growing global semiconductor market, while recognising South Wales as one of the UK’s key semiconductor clusters, because of its region’s strengths in manufacturing and advanced materials.
Together, the reports demonstrate why semiconductors are central to the UK’s economic and industrial future. They are essential to strategic sectors including defence, advanced manufacturing, communications, artificial intelligence and clean energy. In an increasingly fractured and competitive global market domestic semiconductor manufacturing capability is vital to national resilience, supply chain security and manufacturing sovereignty.
As the UK’s largest semiconductor manufacturing facility, Vishay Newport – alongside the South Wales semiconductor cluster – plays a central role in that national capability. The company’s £250 million investment, delivered in partnership with the UK and Welsh Governments, is strengthening the UK’s semiconductor base while supporting more than 500 new jobs and creating long term opportunities across the wider supply chain.
Sam Evans, Director of Quality Assurance and External Affairs at Vishay Newport, said:
“These reports highlight the progress that has been made across the semiconductor sector in South Wales and the wider UK. They demonstrate the value of sustained investment in innovation, skills and manufacturing capability, and reinforce the importance of continuing to support a sector that is increasingly critical to economic growth technological advancement and national resilience.
Vishay is commited to supporting the UK’s ambition to grow its semiconductor sector, strengthen domestic manufacturing capability and ensure the UK is well placed to capture the opportunities presented by increasing global demand.”
