First Minister visits Vishay Newport to showcase semiconductor manufacturing and skills in Wales
October 2026
Vishay was pleased to welcome First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth and Cabinet Minister for Enterprise, Connectivity and Energy Adam Price to Vishay Newport on 24 September 2026 to showcase the UK’s largest semiconductor manufacturing facility and highlight the vital role that advanced manufacturing and semiconductor technology play in driving economic growth, innovation, and highly skilled employment across Wales.
During the visit, the First Minister and Cabinet Minister met with members of the Vishay team and heard first-hand about their career journeys, technical expertise and the exciting work being delivered at the Newport site. The visit provided an opportunity to showcase the people and skills that are helping to support the future of semiconductor manufacturing in Wales.
Vishay was also proud to be joined by members of Dragons RFC, highlighting the importance of collaboration between industry and the local community. Through its partnership with the Dragons, Vishay is helping to inspire the next generation of STEM talent and create meaningful opportunities for young people across the region.
The visit came at an exciting time for the South Wales Semiconductor industry, with preparations underway for ICSCRM 2027, the world’s leading Silicon Carbide conference. Vishay is proud to be partnering with the Welsh Government to help showcase Wales as a global centre of excellence for semiconductor and advanced manufacturing technologies. The partnership will provide an opportunity to highlight the strength of the region’s semiconductor ecosystem and the expertise, innovation and manufacturing capability that underpin its growing international reputation.
The visit also took place on the same day as the official launch of the Cardiff Capital Region Investment Zone, a £160 million programme aiming to attract a further £500 million of private investment and create 4,000 highly skilled jobs over the next 10 years. The launch reflects the wider ambition to reindustrialise Wales, create more well-paid jobs and build on the country’s strengths in advanced manufacturing.
Vishay remains committed to working with government, industry, education and partners across Wales to strengthen the semiconductor sector, support highly skilled employment and help ensure Wales continues to build on its position as a centre of excellence for semiconductor and advanced manufacturing technologies.
